Firmino leads Liverpool in the conquest of the Club World Cup

Doha Liverpool settled a debt by proclaiming itself for the first time champion in the Club World Cup after beating the Brazilian Flamengo 1-0 with a goal from Firmino in the extra time, while goalkeeper Luis Cárdenas was the hero in the penalties for Monterrey to get second occasion the third place of the contest to be imposed 4-3 (global 6-5) against the Saudi Al Halil.

The  Reds , which were sometimes just winners of the victory, could not score until the 99th minute, when the Brazilian Firmino fired from within the area to unlock the match and sentence the duel in favor of the English.

Flamengo had his chance in a Chilean shot by Gabriel Barbosa who stopped his compatriot Alisson Becker, and a controversial foul on Mané de Rafinha (92) that was claimed as a criminal, but VAR said there was no infraction.

The goal of the victory served Firmino to be chosen as the best player in the final, but not to take the Golden Ball of the tournament, which was at the hands of his Egyptian teammate Mohamed Salah.

Flamengo is a really good team, although I think tonight we were better , said an excited Jürgen Klopp, helmsman of the  Reds.

Liverpool, who attended the tournament as monarch of the European Champions League, took a historic rematch because he had not been officially crowned as the best team in the world, having lost two finals of the Intercontinental Cup (1981, 1984) and another of the Club World Cup (2005).

Earlier, Monterrey won third place by doing the somersault and defeating Al Halil 4-3 (6-5 overall), a victory that serves as motivation for the final of the Mx League against America .

The reflectors went to goalkeeper Luis Cardenas, who stopped two shots in the penalty shootout and dominated by confidence and the adrenaline raised his hand to collect the final shot. With one ovation the goalkeeper debuted in international tournaments, after the starter Marcelo Barovero, returned to Mexico to prepare for the duel against the Eagles.

The Asian champion came forward with a goal from the Brazilian Carlos Alberto (35), Jonathan González (55) tied with a header and five minutes later Maximiliano Meza scored the same for Rayados to come back, but the French Bafétimbi Gomis (66) scored with a header that put the 2-2 and took the duel to the penalties. In the shots from eleven meters, the Rayados converted four of their five pitches, after Johan Vásquez was the only one who failed.

We were coming on the podium, I am happy and proud to belong to Monterrey and to lead these players , said Rayados’ helmsman, Antonio Mohamed, while praising goalkeeper Luis Cárdenas in pointing out that  he deserves all the credit .

Liverpool, which defeated Monterrey in the semifinals, recognized the performance of the Monterrey team by making a hallway to collect the bronze medal at the awards ceremony. FIFA awarded recognition to defender José María Basanta, of Rayados, who played his fourth  Mundialito .

Midfielder Jonathan González was the only one who lived a bittersweet experience, because while playing in Qatar he suffered the theft of his house in Monterrey and stole several belongings, including the trophy he received the best young player of the   2018-2019 Concachampions .
